Dr. Ralph Locke

Dr. Ralph Locke is Professor Emeritus of Musicology at the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY where he taught from 1975 until his retirement in 2015. He was also a Faculty Associate at the University of Rochester’s Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies and was a scholarly adviser to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Bard SummerScape.

Dr. Locke received his BA in Music from Harvard and a MA and PhD in History and Theory of Music from the University of Chicago. He studied piano with Kate Friskin at the New England Conservatory and studied voice and conducting in Chicago, West Berlin and Paris. He has had a distinguished and award-winning career as an editor of and contributor to journals and encyclopedias on musicology and is author of the book 'Music, Musicians, and the Saint-Simonians' and 'Musical Exoticism: Images and Reflections'. He is the founding editor of the Book series Eastman Studies in Music (University of Rochester Press)
